About the job:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Aeronautical Engineer: Experimental Aerodynamics in the Aeronautics Systems Impact Area (ASYS) within the Defence and Security cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, designing, and conducting contract experimental aerodynamic testing in CSIRs Experimental Aerodynamics Research group in ASYS using the wind tunnel plants. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

    t

  • Design and plan a wind tunnel test campaign starting from a client SOW in collaboration with technical specialists;
  • t

  • Manage wind tunnel test campaign projects from contract inception to final report delivery;
  • t

  • Perform task work which includes aerodynamic calculations and verifications to determine wind tunnel model dimensioning and instrument tailoring for wind tunnel test experiments;
  • t

  • Participate in design review meetings, internal and external, for wind tunnel model and ancillary systems stress compliance validations;
  • t

  • Participate in wind tunnel test readiness reviews, internal and external;
  • t

  • Direct wind tunnel tests through a wind tunnel test facility as the Test Engineer;
  • t

  • Participate in the wind tunnel test execution as part of the wind tunnel test team in any of the Test Conductor or system operator role;
  • t

  • Perform technical analysis work to support wind tunnel technology and technique development ;
  • t

  • Participate in the development of Technical Demonstrators (TD);

Qualifications, skills and experience:

    t

  • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering in aeronautical engineering or mechanical engineering with at least five years’ experience in experimental test and evaluation task design;
  • t

  • A Post-graduate qualification in aeronautical or mechanical engineering will be an added advantage;
  • t

  • Experience in experimental task team management;
  • t

  • Experience in working together with multiple teams during the design, engineering, implementation, and operational phases of an experimental task execution;
  • t

  • Working experience in the design and implementation of processes and procedures during an experimental design;
  • t

  • Experience in Project management, i.e.. Working within;
  • t

  • High level of computer literacy in using Microsoft Office suite;
  • t

  • Proficient in technical report writing;
  • t

  • Mentor junior team members in areas of technical expertise; 
  • t

  • Must have the following abilities: t
    • Project management skills
    • Team management or training
    • Knowledge about the propagation of error theory
  • t

  • Demonstrated skills in: analytical thinking and decision-making, flexibility and adaptability, investigative orientation, planning, and organising, problem-solving, verbal and written communication, diverse and dynamic teamwork, self-management (planning, prioritizing, and time management – including the ability to work independently), systems-level thinking, collaborating, multi-disciplinary knowledge; configuration management.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

SA Citizenship is necessary, as a Security Clearance is required for this position.
