Legal Counsel(Two positions)

About the job:

The CSIR has a vacancy for Legal Counsel in the Legal and Compliance Services Portfolio. The incumbent will provide comprehensive and effective legal advice to the Organisation and its subsidiaries whilst ensuring effective management of legal and contractual risks. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

    t

  • Act as legal counsel on issues involving the Organisation’s and its’ subsidiaries compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory standards;
  • t

  • Identify legal risks and take appropriate preventative and reactive courses of action;
  • t

  • Handle a variety of complex legal matters and give advice, initiate and/ or facilitate internal and external negotiations;
  • t

  • Contribute to discussions on legal matters and draft required documentation for various research and development, commercial and other business transactions;
  • t

  • Review legal documents and provide advice on appropriate actions;
  • t

  • Provide legal opinions on a variety of requests which are complex in nature;
  • t

  • Co-ordinate legal matters that require external assistance and act as link between the Organisation and external counsel;
  • t

  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the legal department and the cost effectiveness of the organisation;
  • t

  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • t

  • Participate in various meetings (e.g. Exco, Opco, cluster meetings etc.) as requested;
  • t

  • Participate in forums and represent the CSIR in legal matters when requested;
  • t

  • Remain abreast of changes in legislation and regulatory framework.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

    t

  • A relevant legal qualification (LLB; B Proc or similar degree) with at least two years’ post admission experience;
  • t

  • An admitted attorney in good standing with the relevant Law Society/Bar Councils;
  • t

  • Broad legal knowledge (corporate law, litigation, labour law etc.);
  • t

  • Sound understanding of how legal issues affect the organisation;
  • t

  • Sound understanding of institutional Research and Development areas;
  • t

  • Basic commercial/financial experience as well as an understanding of the legal and regulatory framework applicable to public entities will be an advantage.
